What does it mean to be USDA Certified Organic?
Implemented in 2002, the USDA Organics certification system went through over a decade of development. For packaged foods, only products that contain at least 95% organically produced ingredients (the other 5% must come from an approved National Organic Program list) can use the seal on its packaging and must be made in facilities that are certified to meet strict USDA Organic guidelines. Certified by an independent third-party, all USDA Certified Organic products must show documentation that allows full traceability from the retailer shelves to the field where the organic ingredients were grown.
How does organic food benefit babies and children?
There are many reasons to choose organic food for your children – not only because of what it doesn’t contain, but also because of what it does. For example, organic food is richer in essential nutrients than conventionally-farmed produce. According to Super Nanny, organic food is also significantly better tasting, especially after the body gets used to not consuming many of the additives in non-organic food.
In general, it’s always a good idea to avoid foods that are high in added salt or artificial ingredients, particularly for babies and small children. As weaning marks the beginning of taste development, it’s best not to allow babies to get accustomed to poor quality, processed foods as it can easily become an ingrained habit for years or even a lifetime.
Organic is also the smart choice for parents concerned about the presence of chemicals in their child’s food. These chemicals are hard for young bodies to process. Organic food, with 95% fewer chemicals than non-organic food, helps reduce the amount of toxins entering the body in the first place. As babies eat many fruits and vegetables, avoiding those treated with pesticides by choosing organic can make a significant difference.
What does non-GMO food mean?
1. Non-GMO means non-genetically modified organisms. GMOs (genetically modified organisms), are novel organisms created in a laboratory using genetic modification/engineering techniques. Scientists and consumer and environmental groups have cited many health and environmental risks with foods containing GMOs. 2. Genetic modification affects many of the products we consume on a daily basis.

What are the benefits of organic food?
- Organic produce contains fewer pesticides. Chemicals such as fungicides, herbicides, and insecticides are widely used in conventional agriculture and residues remain on (and in) the food we eat.
- Organic food is often fresher because it doesn’t contain preservatives that make it last longer. Organic produce is often (but not always, so watch where it is from) produced on smaller farms near where it is sold.
- Organic farming is better for the environment. Organic farming practices reduce pollution, conserve water, reduce soil erosion, increase soil fertility, and use less energy. Farming without pesticides is also better for nearby birds and animals as well as people who live close to farms.
- Organically raised animals are NOT given antibiotics, growth hormones, or fed animal by-products. Feeding livestock animal by products increases the risk of mad cow disease (BSE) and the use of antibiotics can create antibiotic-resistant strains of bacteria. Organically-raised animals are given more space to move around and access to the outdoors, which help to keep them healthy.
- Organic meat and milk are richer in certain nutrients. Results of a 2016 European study show that levels of certain nutrients, including omega-3 fatty acids, were up to 50 percent higher in organic meat and milk than in conventionally raised versions.
- Organic food is GMO-free. Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) or genetically engineered (GE) foods are plants whose DNA has been altered in ways that cannot occur in nature or in traditional crossbreeding, most commonly in order to be resistant to pesticides or produce an insecticide
